smoke damage

Hi allydowd,
I left gravy on the hob and forgot about it last week and there was a dreadful smell of smoke throughout the house. I'd read a tip on here about boiling vinegar to neutralise the smell so put a large bottle of vinegar and the same amount of water into a saucepan, brought it to the boil and let it simmer until it had almost evaporated. The smell dissappeared completely. If you have had a house fire I don't know how effective it would be but it certainly worked for me.
There's an earlier thread with more advice that may help so I'll add your post to it to keep the suggestions together.

I've been experimenting with ways of getting rid of the smell of smoke in the rooms that weren't too badly smoke damaged. This was mainly smoke from the burning of foam-filled furniture and wood. So far I have tried:
*Spraying water and aromatherapy oils. Verdict: Lasts for about 5 mins.
*Boiling water and lemon juice on the cooker. Verdict: Didn't work at all.
*Cleaning everything in the room. Verdict: Helped but didn't eradicate the smell.
*Opening windows: Verdict: Helps, until you shut the window again.
*Neutradol air freshener. Verdict: Has almost solved the problem in a couple of rooms. Takes the smell away in the worst room for about 15 mins.
*Neutradol DeoFab. Verdict: Seems to work quite well on fabrics.
Overall verdict: Sometimes Old Style ways aren't always the best!Debt-free day: 8th May 2015 "Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck," Dalai Llama0
