Tesco home insurance

Hi......

Having problems with our payout from Tesco Home Ins. Does anyone happen to know if we have to accept a 'voucher' for our jewellery claim or can we get paid out by cash/chq??

Unable to give receipts but have shown a picture of one item, but still they are claiming we have to accept a voucher - which we don't want as the items stolen were invaluable and of sentimental value.

Has anyone had the same problem and did you manage to rectify it??

    http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/publications/ombudsman-news/10/oct-repair-replace-cash.htm

    - No you do not have to accept the vouchers. The link above is for the Financial Ombudsman Service. Their decision is binding on insurers. Just refer them to that and they should back down.

Just quote para 5 of the Ombudsman News Oct 2001 (Repair Replace or Cash). If the handler hasn't got a clue what you are on about, ask to speak to someone who does, or better still, put it in writing.
  • Thanks for that MattyMoo.... we're going to give Tesco a call armed with your info!!!

    Wish us luck :T

Knowing Tesco they may try and suggest the ombudsman view does not apply on this occasion. If they do this, ask them to confirm in writing why they feel this is the case.

Also, before you call, check your policy booklet re "complaints procedure" and if you get no joy, ask for the case to be treated as a formal complaint and escalated accordingly.

I totally agree with both Mattys posts, I would add that I would not be surprised if the Ombudsman ruling / guidance notes are news to the person at Tesco you speak to as an amazing amount of claims staff do not know of this and will keep trying to insist you have to take vouchers
  • Thanks,
The calim is being dealt with by UK Assistance. The Rep came to the house, she is my point of contact, it al goes through her.
Do you know of issues with this company?

    Thanks
  • We have discussed the enclosed information, and Tesco( UK assitance),still will not move and insist on only giving us the Vouchers.
We have requested a letter explaining why, and intend to compain to Tesco, and FSO.

    Any tips please?

    Thanks

As Mattyn has suggested it might be worth asking them to confirm in writing why the Ombudsmans Rulings / Guidance do not apply to them (Assuming your case fits into the ombudsmans guidance / rulings)
