NatWest Charges, But THEIR error!!!

Hi please can someone help me or point me in the right direction.

Last month I bought some tickets to the GP, at the time I transferred the funds and made the payment over the phone, no problem.

The payment was made 5th June however didnt show up on the account until 8th June. I was therefore charged £35 guaranteed debit card fee and then a further £28 for going overdrawn because of this.

I tried to argue the fact that I had put sufficient funds etc., but they were having none of it and I couldnt claim back a penny.

I have logged on today and the same thing has happened, they have charged me £35 for a £10 transaction and another £35 for a £15 transaction.

Now I am very very good when it comes to checking my account every single day and transferring funds etc., into my account at around 6am every morning as NatWest say they need funds in by 12pm otherwise they reject the payment/charge you etc.

Anyway, these charges were due to go on my account on 10th July, when I logged onto the account first thing in the morning they had not gone on so transferred sufficient funds to cover cheques and D/D that had gone out that morning. I checked my account during the day and nothing so assumed they would go on the following day.

When I logged on the Saturday morning the charges had been added to the account so I immediately transferred £100 to cover the charges.

NOW I am being charged around £110 because apparently the charges were added at the end of the working day and I didnt check at the end of the day and I am now being stung for this amount of money and I really cannot afford this.

Can someone help please as its really stressing me out!

Thanks LL

  • What time did you do the intial transfer on the Friday?
Was it from a NatWest Account to another NatWest account?
(apologies but I had one PM and the forum doesn't allow you to respond to all of them at the same time so hope you don't mind if we keep the details on this thread?)
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

Hi does this help........... have no problems keeping it on here and thanks for your quick reply

This is my letter that I am sending today..........

    1. At the close of business on 9th July 2009 I was overdrawn by £196.32 – at the time of writing, please bear in mind that I have a £250.00 overdraft.

    2. When I logged onto my account on the morning of 10th July 2009 the ONLY transaction to be debited from my account was a direct debit to Hastings Insurance for £28.40 which in turn put me overdrawn by £224.72 (still within my overdraft limit).

    3. During the morning of 10th July 2009 I used my card twice, once at Morrisons for £10.00 and a further transaction at Asda for £15.12 which still kept me within my £250 overdraft limit.

    4. I checked my balance online on various occasions during the working day and was ALWAYS within my overdraft limit. At the close of business on 10th July 2009 I WAS within my agreed £250 overdraft limit.

    5. When I logged into my account on Saturday 11th July 2009, I had received various bank charges totalling £78.58; this included my monthly Advantage Gold Fee. I immediately transferred £100 into the account to bring my balance back under my agreed overdraft limit.

I am now very shocked and upset to find that today I discover I am now being charged a further £110 in charges due to the transactions on 10th July 2009!

Due to YOUR charges being added to my account, I am now being penalised further!
  • That wasn't where I was starting from, I meant in June because the charges always goes out close of business on the date they are due(21 days after your statement date).

  • To clarify, the charges are NOT ANYTHING TO DO WITH ME.

Sorry I am confused (easily done!). I have already had a row with NatWest re the charges in June and they won't budge. These are relating to charges I have found out about today due to be charged 10th Aug

I'm trying to work out how the charges first of all occurred, and to make sure you know fully what has happened and if there is a bank error then we can work on getting the money back so I do understand the frustration of dealing with the bank cos their hands are sometimes tied.

basically what happened it I tried to buy some Silverstone tickets one evening and the card was declined due to the online payment address not matching my card address BUT the money was still taken and put into a holding account whereby I was told that the money would reappear back onto the account a few days later - which it did.

i was told that secure the tickets I would need to pay for them again, so I rang them just after 9am the following day and transferred the money and then made the payment over the phone - this went through fine.

The problem is, is that the payment was made 5th June but didnt show on my account until 8th June and they are saying that because other payments that went out on that day were honoured this Silverstone payment was honoured 3 days before when there were sufficient funds (does that make sense?) so they charged me £35 for the actual day the details showed on the account - 8th june?

to clarify, there were other payments on the account going out(and there was the ghost payment which later went back in) which caused the issue. Was the amount transferred covering the other payments plus the GP tickets? Were you relying on the other payment dropping off the system before the payment went through?

I don't do private emails on the forums unfortunately, I do private messages on the forum and answer all of them but not off forum emails. Apologies.
