Barbados/Florida/Keys

Hey All

We are looking to book our honeymoon at one of the above locations for September.
I have been looking and so far failing to find that perfect romantic, very luxurious, secluded hotel but close to local amenities.

As I am a real fusspot there also needs to be some access to english food!

Anyone have any idea's?

I haven't been for many years, but Captiva Island always used to be considered a luxury hideaway in Florida:

You could try these websites for inspiration:

ps: Was there a reason that you chose Barbados over other Caribbean Islands? There are many beautiful, tropical hideaways in that part of the world - you may also perhaps wish to consider other islands, or maybe the Bahamas or Bermuda.

Just as an aside, it is the hurricane season in that area in September but that would not put me off of travelling.

Thank you those links. Have also checked out Captica/Sanibel. The main limitation on islands really is that they have access to some english food! Some of the other islands are smaller and prehaps don't cater aswell. A Hurricane would be a bonus! I love severe weather!

When you say English food, I should imagine you would be absolutely fine anywhere in the Caribbean as they are used to dealing with Western palates - in fact I would say in a lot of places it is probably harder to get authentic local food!

There aren't really any beaches on the Florida Keys. The best beaches are on the Gulf Coast so if its beaches you want then its not the place for you. We stayed in Key largo last year and there was not really anywhere you could walk to. It was a good location for gettting to Miami and the Everglades and of course Key West. There is also the John Pennekamp coral reef and losts of opportunities to swim with dolphins etc.It is a long way down the keys and if you are planning to travel around I would not advise going too far down the keys as you will spend a lot of time driving back and forth.

There are a wide range of restaurants and so you should be able to get food that you like.

Few nights in South Beach Miami in a posh hotel in the Art Deco area, then a short hop to Aruba (outside the hurricane belt) ?

The beaches on the Keys are small but adorable (Bahia Honda is one of the USA's Ten Best Beaches, despite being barely wide enough to lie down on at some points in the day), and Key West really isn't to be missed if you can avoid it. It's like the best bits of San Francisco and New Orleans decided to wander off on holiday, got drunk, got married and settled down to raise a happy little family of bars.

Be very careful of hidden charges when staying in Miami Beach, though - one hotel added more than $36 per night for "mandatory extras" like parking, pool towels, local calls and other such things to my Expedia rate!

Also, we didn't stay there more than one night, because of the mice, the infestation of biting fire ants in the bathroom and red-and-yellow poisonous caterpillars under the pillow. (Prefer chocolates meself).

That said, I think it's not par for the area. Major props to the hotel next door (Sheraton Four Points, I think) - they were full, but took pity on us and allowed us to use their phones and Business Centre's intarnets to get us the hell out of Dodge. Also to Expedia who - on reception of emailed pic of room and its other guests - rebooked us in under an hour and even credited us for the night we spent.

I've noticed that supermarkets like Publix keep British food in the " Ethnic Section", whilst being vastly overpriced.

Well pretty much anything that isn't spicy, weird tasting, fishy or containing any rice!Pototoe products and generic meat such as lamb, beef and chicken are all ok.
