BT landline cancellation: info needed

I sent an email to BT directly from their website one week ago requesting cancellation of my account for the landline. I got an immediate automatic reply, but nothing since. Is it too soon to start worrying that they have overlooked my request?
I didn't want to phone them because I was afraid of overseas call centres and being kept hanging on for ages, and being charged a lot while they tried to sell me some other packages, but I was wondering whether a letter would have been better or is still advisable.
I would also like to know if it is entirely an admin thing, or whether they need to come and do anything physical.

Never done it online, always just phoned up and done it. Took about 10 minutes every time (including the 4 minutes spent circumnavigating voice prompts).Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Unlike most other major suppliers its free to call BT from any landline on FreePhone 0800 800150.
They dont have to visit you,the line can be switched off remotely.0 -
Thanks people. I know that BT are dealing with a large number of customers, so should be patient. I am waiting to see how much they charge me in my final bill!Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

If you don't hear anything in next few days regarding cancellation of BT line, PM me your BT account details, I will look into this for you.

I emailed BT on July 15th, they have replied today. The cancellation will take effect from August 6th, and I will receive my final bill 7-14 days later.
It seems a long time to wait to see how much they hit me for! As a LUS user, I paid June/July/August in advance, so I am not sure what to expect.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Hi, I am happy to look into this for you. As long as you are not in a contract period you will be given a refund of any line rental paid in advance after the 6th August 2009. If you are in a contract period then cancellation charges will apply. If you would like me to look in to this futher send a private message and include your account details.
Many Thanks
Donna

its a 14 day notice so you will get a refund of advance charges over the 14 days but the LUS credit will be adjusted to reflect the cancel.0 -
Thank you for the information, I am happy that the cancellation request has been acknowledged and is being actioned, also that they will not be coming round with a giant pair of wire cutters and a socket sealer! I will wait and see what the final figure is before asking for personal intervention from a BT rep. I am not on any contract and have no services so it should be straightforward.
This is a great way to avoid unsolicited and intrusive phone calls from overseas too.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

No problem. You know where we are if you need help with the final bill.
