  • Do you have to let them know about ANY work you do? Do you have to get permission to do this work or are you allowed to do any work, as long as it does not go over the threshold?

Does permitted mean they have to authorise any work before you do any?

If your work is irregular you will be ringing them forever saying, last week i earned so much and then another month the same. Then adjustments to your IB.

Do you have to let them know every time you do any work? Would be very diffucult for irregular self-employed work.

    The PW leaflet is here-
    http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/jcp/stellent/groups/jcp/documents/websitecontent/dev_015480.pdf

You only need to keep within the PW limits on both earnings/hours. PW is normally only allowed for up to 52 weeks.
  • Here's a difficult one ...

I've been offered a payment for taking part in a drug trial. Does this affect my IB? Does it count as earnings? Do I have to declare it as income to the taxman? No-one seems to be able to give me an answer to these questions.

It's easy- why would it not be treated as taxable earnings and possibly affect your IB?

Because the DWP tell me they're not sure. They were meant to be getting back to me, but haven't. They're uncertain because I'm no doing any actual work for it - but they don't think it qualifies as a windfall either. On problem is that the trial lasts for some months, and they're not sure how to divide the payment up, or whether to at all, since it'll be paid as a lump sum.

I thought it would be a simple question, too - but I can't get anyone to give me a peoper answer.

Do you still need to have NI contributions to get this benefit?

Why not ask the drug company/hospital trust/PCT ?

Very good advice - unfortunately they tell me it's my responsibility and they are not allowed (they say!) to advise me.

Ever get the feeling no-one wants to be held responsible for possibly giving the wrong answer?

You're not asking for advice, you're asking for information.

  • Hi everyone, can anyone please tell me if a one hour lunch break is counted under permitted working rules?

Before I started PW on 2/9/08 I filled in pw1 form but I put down 16 hours per week, however I still got written permission to do permitted work.

I stopped permitted work only 6 weeks later on 15/10/08 because I could not cope with fighting with DWP and focusing on my permitted work at the same time. (Sounds lame but I'm on sick note for stress, depression and also all problems linked to being a profoundly deaf person).

So dwp then stop all my benefits from my pw start date of 2/9/08 on the same information that they originally allowed my permitted work.

I never earnt more than £92 pw and I did two days a week from 8.45am till 4.45pm, due to one hour lunch break, my logic is that I only actually worked 7 hour days so really I was doing 14 hours permitted work a week. It turns out though that I did get paid for my lunch break but still it did not bring my weekly earnings above £92.

    Thanks.

    Allen
