Can a consumer unit go outside?

    Thanks for the suggestions... I did a little bit more digging online last night and it seems that unless it's a newbuild then the consumer unit doesn't have to be so high. I'm sure someone will correct me if that's wrong. Also I read that it can be as low as 45cm so we should be able to just keep the meter where it is and when we get a new consumer unit put it on the adjacent wall at 45cm which is low enough for us to build a cupboard around.

    We will be getting an electrician in to have a look as soon as we have the keys!

    I'd agree with the boxing in solution - I looked into moving my meters (gas meter in the corner of the living room similar to your electric, and electric in the kitchen). The costs were astronomical, so I've just worked round it instead.
