Fraudulent transactions on blocked card

Hi - I was wondering if anyone had any experience of transactions continuing to be made on a card that has been stolen and stopped?

I've recently found transactions on my credit card that look like they are from toll roads in Spain and France for 5th-7th April. I've confirmed that these transactions were made using my old card that was stolen, and identified with Visa and Barclays as stolen, on the 4th February.

Barclays initially assumed that the transactions must have been made with the new card details; when I asked them to check they confirmed the old card details had been used. It was then suggested (admittedly by someone who was fairly adamant that the transactions must have been made with the new card) that these transactions must date from the two hour period between when the card was stolen, in Barcelona, and when Visa / Barclays were informed. As there are £179 worth of toll charges this seems unlikely but I can't discount this option.

Has anyone had a similar experience - either of fresh transactions on a blocked card, or transactions taking two months to show up? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

same thing happened to me last year
cards were stolen in spain in may - all cancelled and replaced (barclaycard and IF cards)
fraud transactions started showing up in august on 2 cards

they were credited back to me mind you prolly because of the time difference in teh cards being stolen and teh transactions

IF were brilliant spoke to the fraud dept etc and kept me updated by telephone whereas barclaycard were like oh we'll send a form out and i had to call them all the time to find out what was happening

I played devils advocate. I lost a card that I was going to use to pay for fuel. Couldn't find it anywhere, reported it lost at 1200, jumped into the car, there it was in the glove compartment. Called again to report it found, was told it was too late, the card had been blocked and a new card would be posted to me.

I tried the card in 4 different places over the next twenty four hours, canceling the transactions after they'd been approved and then paid using cash. In one place I even asked them to do a check on the card - it came back OK.

My local MP witnessed that the card had been blocked 24hrs previously, and viewed the till transaction slips and the verification slip. He was astounded - result a mention on Radio 4.

Last place I tried it after meeting my MP was Threshers, I told the shop assistant what had happened - she tried the card, was prompted to retain it. She benefited £50.

No further action. RBOS weren't interested, therefore I cancelled my card with them.

Poppy's experience with barclaycard certainly accords with my own - the irony is they have allowed numerous foreign transactions to go through unhinderered to the point where the card is significanlty over it's limit, yet they routinely block the card if I pay too much onto it.
I must say I'm a bit shocked by James experience though - i'd decided that there must be weak spots in the continental security measures but it seems caution is needed at home as well.

Update: more spanish toll road charges have been added to the account; a further call to barclaycard has revealed that these toll machines do not perform the necessary security checks to identify a card as blocked - barclaycard now seem to be accepting these charges date from April which is a relief but the person I spoke to did not know of any mechanism to stop the charges from continuing to acrue in the future - looks like I may also have to close my account.

Recommend asking Barclaycard to issue you with a new account, and transfer over the transactions which do belong to you. That way, they'll pick up the admin for anything else which does come through.
So many glitches, so little time...
