bigger clothes for kids?

Do any of you lovely people out there, know of any companies/shops,who sell more generous fitting kids clothes? My DD is nearly 10,with a chubby middle, and legs like twigs, and getting trousers and skirts to fit her is turning into a real nightmare! My only other option is to buy bigger teenage sizes and have them altered, but I thought I would ask on here first. thanks in advance;)

  • I had this problem a few years ago (well I had to get the clothes for DD1 !!) I found that PETITE sizes in womens clothes were the best for fit - waist and leg length as they are designed for the shorter lady ( from 4' 10 upwards). I occasionally had to take up a pair of school trousers but only by an inch or so. Lots of chain stores do PETITE clothes from size 6/8. Try looking in ASDA/TESCO/BHS/Dorothy P etc. Good luck with this - I know it's horrible watching your child trying on lots of clothes that are too tight and feeling unhappy and she really didn't want the 'clothes for fat kids from BHS'! - the petite ranges (and also the standard size 8 -that were just a bit long on the leg) fitted my child really well and it was lovely letting her pick something off the shelf, try it on and being able to buy it for her - boosted her self esteem a lot.
Just another note : Don't stress too much about it - a few years late she are now back to standard height/standard waist/chest etc and I have a happy, confident child who loves buying clothes!!

  • next do a plus size range for kids. i was on today getting school clothes for my son and noticed they have school trousers in plus sizes for kids. i never looked at other clothes but did notice these.

i have the opposite problem my son 9 is like a stick. hes always pulling his trousers up, i have bought adjustable waist trousers but they look worse as they are all gathered in at the waist. and hes getting older now there not cool....

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!

I was going to recommend the BHS 'generous' range - mce why doesn't your daughter want 'clothes for fat kids'?

My 'sturdy' boy is starting school soon so I'm currently looking. BHS sell trousers, and they also have generous size blouses etc.

Next sell plus size in their trousers but I didn't spot any shirts etc. which is annoying because my child's chest and hips are similar, so if he needs generous trousers then he also needs a generous shirt.

I bought the BHS trousers and they fit well, similar to the £10 a pair 'sturdy fit' from the schoolwear shop.

Mine isn't 4 yet and can't button shirts, but I've had no luck getting polo shirts that are wide enough around his chest, everything is so tight he can't move his arms comfortably, so far.

  • I found the BHS ones were a dreadful shape - my DD had a larger than average tummy but everywhere else was fairly standard. The clothes for larger children seemed to be made in a 'large all over tent style' which absolutely swamped her!! The legs were really wide, and they also seemed to accentuate the problem whereas petite size trousers fitted well and looked lovely on her.

Thanks very much to you all who replied to my dilemma.I will definitely be looking in Next and will have a look in asda too.My DD2 is the complete opposite, and is like a whippet, and it really upsets DD1 because she has no problem getting clothes to fit her, sigh.:A

Sometimes whippet-thin children also struggle to find clothes. My 2 are complete opposites.

hurrah for summer, where they can wear shorts and t-shirts in smaller or larger age sizes :)

mce I did think the bhs shirts looked tent-like, a bit like maternity. I haven't seen them on though, so perhaps they'd look okay on my boy. We've been talking about this at nursery today, a few of the mums are after larger fitting clothes, but we all have different needs. My friend's daughter has a big belly (it swells after she eats too) but hasn't got a barrel-like chest, whereas my boy's belly is flat but his chest and shoulders are broad. Neither of us like the look of the BHS shirts.

Ohh i didn't know that I need larger sizes for my DD - thanks for that.

I have one of these too! Thankfully not too fashion conscience yet so still get away with the adjustable waists. We did find a good fit in M&S yesterday, with adjustable waist.

Why can't my children be standard sizes? I always stress about clothes especially DD as she does sometimes get told she's 'fat' - shes only 6, is tall for her age too. Still off to next and dreaded BHS for the larger fit I go.
