next best cc after nationwide abroad

Can anybody tell me the next best credit card to use abroad after the Nationwide. My husband applied and was turned down. We've never had a problem with credit before but he applied online and Experian could not identify him. We have had a look at the 30 day free trial on Experian and have the same problem. It is a problem with him, as opposed to the address, as I have done the same and can get the trial. I applied for the credit card but was turned down because my income is too low (which annoyed me as the branch told me that they issue to students  ) We are going on holiday in 6 weeks and I think it may take longer than that to sort out so what is the next best thing for us to take. We can get credit at this address just not someone who uses Experian.

    Is hubby on electoral roll?
I had big probs until I was registered to vote - even though I don't vote EVER for anything.

My parents have a SAGA card (have to be over 50). It has no fees for in the EU, and 1% for rest of world.
  • Thanks for that. Yes he is on electoral roll; we're going to USA and we're under 50. Please, please some more suggestions. Thanks in anticipation

That sounds like either hubby's name and/or address was not spely totally correctly- even an apostrophe out of place can result in Experian not recognising someone.
Have you got the free trial from Experian to check your record?
...also give NW a ring to try and find out why they rejected him.

  • Thanks for that. Nationwide are appealing it for him. We have tried the Experian 30 free trial which I have done but the same thing happens for him for that so we have not made any progress in that direction. But I do need to try and sort another credit card to take on holiday as we have 2 of the 3 listed on this site as the worst to take with you. If someone knows of the next best to take to USA for under 50's I would really appreciate it.

Why credit card? Do you need to borrow for this trip? If not, Nationwide debit card and cash card don't have currency exchange loading too and are easier to get than their credit card.

Also there are prepaid 'credit' cards that don't charge currency exchange fee. For example, http://bluecorner.co.uk/prepaid/parents.html (maestro). However, it costs £9.95 to get and 95p to draw cash, that is not a lot for big amounts (max. preload is £1000).
  • Thanks for all your help. Will look into debit cards as we don't need to borrow and I can certainly look into this and talk to Frizzells. Will talk to other half about prepaid card as I have never heard of this and also worth a thought. Thanks again
