I was given a pc a few weeks ago and was told that the the dvd drive wasnt reading. I do know a bit about computers so didnt think it would be a problem to reinstall the drivers and it would be sorted.
The PC desperatly needs reinstalling it is running really slowly, the drivers for the dvd drive are the most up to date ones i have tried uninstalling them and reinstalling them it has made no difference. In device manager it is showing there is no problem with it.
I have tried looking for the I386 file and it doesnt appear to be on there
Does anyone have any suggestions??
Please

Yes i have and everything seems fine, I have pushed everything in to make sure it is there also.
When i open up the dvd drive folder in my computer (the computer is detecting it as being there) it is offering the option of writing the files to cd however none of the files are viewable. Have tried with xp pro cd and audio cds now too.0 -
Thats what i was thinking, I have another machine which isnt being used at the mo so i could swap them over just wanted to know if there was a way around it before doing so though!!
Cheers for your help Jaffa!!

CD and DVD drives use generic drivers that come bundled with Windows, you'll never need to install drivers for them.
CD and DVD drives, especially the cheap one's fitted to shop brought PC's tend to be made by "Lite-On" and are forever going wrong.... I've replaced 3 "Lite-On" DVD drives in the past 2 months, all with dead drive motors.
Cheap OEM drives are just useless, so go out and get yourself an LG GH22NP20 DVDRW for around £17 online (£26 at PC world) Ive been using these and they're really nice drives.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Its actually a Phillips that is in there, I wouldnt use a Lite-On even if i had to, did it once wouldnt do it again! The one i am swapping it with isnt a Lite-On neither.0

I may be worth giving a blast of compressed air into the drive. If there's any dust covering the laser it'll shift it.0

Will it actually spin up when you insert a disk? If so the drive is physically OK, but the laser is probably dirty. You could use a cleaning disk on it.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

We'll never be safe from the dreaded lite-on!

I thought that until I installed win7 on a new build that included an 8-odd year old DVD writer and recieved the message that i'd need to manually locate the DVD drivers simply to read the Installation disk! After an age working out it was an NEC drive and going through their site it appeared i'd need to update the firmware, so downloaded all the crap for that.... and then decided it'd be a lot quicker to buy a new drive for the installation. After the O.S was on the very first thing it did was update the driver succesfully...0
