I've been searching about for info on if my child on DLA would be able to get a grant towards a further education course. Direct.gov implies that you can claim Income Support whilst on a course but I'm sure he won't fullfil the criteria because of living with parents. He's been trying to get a job/apprenticeship for nearly a year and is not on JSA . It is a case that some education resulting in a recognised qualification is the way forward at the mo. as the g.c.s.e's don't seem to count for much.
Hope this is on the right board , I've a feeling I'm not expressing myself very well, I don't know if it is a disability problem or benefits query !

Hi Jollyanna,
You would probably get more advice by posting on the benefits board as the people that would most likely be able to help you most use it more than this one.I'd rather regret the things I've done than regret the things I haven't done.

my son aged almost 19 is studying at FE college and will be taking a third course this september and he has never had to pay any fees - we have never looked at seeing if he could get a grant or JSA as I get DLA for him and also Tax credits for him are quite high as he gets HRC DLA - so financially we have managed - not sure if this is helpful to you or not, sorry !0 -
Hello JollyAnna,
I would always think that Connexions would be a good starting point.
They will know what courses are available, through colleges and training providers.
He would be able to claim either EMA or and Adult Learning Grant depending on his age, and the family income.
With the employment market as it is, there is more government schemes for young people to be in some form of recognised training
My son is will soon be 19, and I still receive CTC an CHB for him, whilst he receives his DLA. He will be continuing at college to finish his NVQ level 2.
Regards
Munchie0
