Do you paint pipes?

Currently painting my kitchen and i am carefully avoiding all my nice new copper pipe work and my friend thinks i should paint them the same colour as the walls.

Anybody do this and is this ok for the actual pipes?

Some you won't see when kitchen is fitted, but the ones they are on about are some from the boiler which will show a little from above the new fitted cupboard going to upstairs and the radiator tails.

Paint the pipes the same colour as the walls, they will discolour in the long term.

Same colour as the wall/skirting - whatever is behind them .... unless you intend for them to "stand out" as a "design feature" .....

Obviously you would want the pipes to be the same colour as your wall colour, specially if they are against them, but before you emulsion any bare copper pipes, you must give them a coat of oil based undercoat first.

If you dont, and you just emulsion, the pipes will turn green and discolour.

Ok i get the message, probably because they are all nice and shiny at the moment i was reluctant to spoil them.

Thanks Misgrace, i would have just emulsioned them, better look for a small tin of undercoat then.

Paint them in an oil based gloss or eggshell finish the same colour as the wall paint. Emulsion won't work for the reasons stated previously. Undercoat doesn't flex with expansion and contraction the way that gloss or eggshell does so it will also crack in time.

    Cheers

My ex-inlaws had central heating fitted in their house. All the copper pipes are on display and unpainted, and they get polished most days. I must admit they do look a bit odd.
Here I go again on my own....
