I'm a new Gas & Electricity customer - Where do I start?

Hi,

I have just moved into a rented flat in SW19 and want to know how I can go about finding the best deal on gas & electricity. The previous occupant used NPower, ... but when I moved in everything was already on. Does this mean I am already paying for the utilities even though I am yet to agree to anything? I am very confused as all the information seems to be about 'switching' your utilities, although I am just starting. What is the best thing for me to do?

Yes you will be supplied by whoever the previous owner was using. You should ring them as soon as possible and check that a meter reading was provided by the previous occupant, also read the meters yourself to be sure they are accurate.
Once registered you are then free to switch to whoever you choose.
Ask a neighbour what their annual consumption is as use it on one of the comparison sites.
