How to find a missing person?

  • England and Wales deaths are on Ancestry.co.uk from 1984 -2005, all indexed so all you need to put in is the name and date of birth and if he's not there he didn't die in England and Wales in that time.

Local libraries often have a subscription - if not I'm sure someone on here will have and will be prepared to do a look up for you.

  • Haven't seen this mentioned but try googling him. IE putting his name into google (both spellings) in quotation marks like this "john doe" If hes active online it is quite possible it will throw up a general location. For example if I google my name comments I've left on newspaper articles are thrown up which have a location. Obviously there will be many people with his name *but* you might see something that rings bells that you can investigate further.

Speaking as a former missing person you may find they don't want to know even if you do find him, so please be prepared for that. I had to come back in my own time but sometimes a gentle nudge is needed. You may even find he is trying to locate your family. Make sure there is plenty of oppotunity for him to get in touch. Create a facebook page for the dad and really explore the social networking sites. He may be in contact with old friends (I was). Find groups for his old school and post about him in those. Good luck in your search

thank you phyre faerie - thats very helpful. We are prepared for the possibility he may not want to be found - we really just want to know if he's still alive and anything after that will be a bonus.

The Salvation Army tracing service will track down a close relative, will advise that he/she has been found but will not disclose the missing persons contact details without their permission.
