Santander Credit

My husband and I have now been refused credit 3 times by companies using Santander as their credit provider (Debenhams, Asda and Evans.) This has come as a bit of a shock each time as we both have good credit histories. To prove the point, I have just been on to Experian and we both have 999 credit scores!!

Can anybody throw any light on this please? Thanks

  • you check equifax as well?

I do not know who they use for credit searches but its worth checking equifax as well.

Chances are maybe you dont meet their criteria but as I dont work for them, I would never know

    Sorry

Credit score on either experian/equifax does not mean anything to any CC provider, its just a mean for exp/equi to make money. Each lender have their own criterias. Trying to apply to 3 different cards with same provider is not advise as if one of them decline your application it is more likely the others within same group will do as well. I have been declined with Santander a few months ago. I have a reasonable credit file, not excellent but just got my Barclaycard with a £6,000 credit limit. Unfortunately it is a bit of a pot luck at the moment

Thank you Eric - a very interesting article which I believe applies to us. How unfair to discriminate against those of us "good" people - I'll have to default a few times!!

There immoral business who just lost a fortune gambling and chasing mega bonus's

So they want to maximise there profits and that means weeding out those that cant pay and those who don't earn them money. And thanks to Gordo's relaxation of what data can be shared they can now identify "good" risks and ignore them.

The rest get to pay back the banks losses and there next round of bonus's with 30% APR

Just goes to show how good the banks marketing is that we dont see them as money grabbing coperations (or as Martin puts it debt pushers) but friendly public servants.

Hi amd Welcome to the Forums.
It seems strange that you're being refused store cards.
Do you currently have credit cards?
If you are looking for a first-time credit card consider Capital One Classic, or Barclay's Initial, etc. They are well documented on this forums and site.
You can, however, pop-in or phone your bank (where your current account is with) and see if they can offer you a credit card.

To get around this take out a no fee BT on a 0% rate card with a decent balance c. 500 - 1000. Put it in a interest earning account for 5 months then pay back the amount as the rate expires. The balance amount will cause the credit providers to log you has carrying a balance, thus more likely to pay interest. you have a temp hit to your credit score due to the search, but it will open up more options to you on products.

I work for debenhams and we have been informed that santander have tightened their criteria for accepting applications for store cards. We have a lot more declines going through now so you're not alone.

Please could you indicate any providers where you can get a no fee BT on a 0% rate ? Thanks in advance.

I suspected that. Thanks for letting me know.
Just out of interest, do you get commission for selling credit cards to people?
I have often wondered but never got around to asking / researching.
