BT Cooling Off Period

Can someone please tell me if the following is correct:
I phoned up BT to cancel a new order as I believed that I was still in my cooling off period (this was 6 days after I had ordered). The operator had to escalate the call because they did not have a clue what I was talking about. His manager informed me that BT did not offer cooling off periods as they sell a service and not a product. I was also informed that when the service goes live that's it for 12 months even though I received the go live letter after the service went live (go figure).
I reckon the above is against the law, but is it correct?
I accidentally picked the 12 month unlimited evening and weekend plan and wanted to cancel then reorder with a plan that does not lock me in for 12 months.

You can normally only cancel your order, free of charge, before they have provided the service. Their is not a cooling off period.0

Thanks utilitybroker.
It is a pity they started providing the service before I received my letter stating when the date of service started because that's the point when I realised that it was a 12 month contract.
Lesson learnt.0 -

If you ordered it over phone they should have explained everything,if they didnt you have probaly got grounds for getting out of contract.0 -

I ordered online at work during a ten minute skive therefore didn't read a thing........it is completely my fault and I have to accept the consequence.
Cheers for your help!0
