I love the M&S sale but this problem happens every year without fail! I too was ordering stuff on Wednesday night (before the sale officially started) and have had the same problem as you.

The way most people feel about the Next sale is the way I feel about the M&S sale

Next - I think the sale is ok, I will place a small order if I have a VIP invite.
M&S - look forward to the sale all season, plan what I want in advance, keep checking the website the night before the sale starts every few minutes, and will also visit a few stores as well as going online.

I'm teaching in Vietnam so I had to put my order in at 4AM over here

But luckily all my orders have been fully despatched...seems like I've ordered early enough...

Just been on the phone to M&S and utterly disgusted with what I was told:

I ordered 22 items at approx 10PM on 22nd July (when the sale prices started to appear)
I have been sent 2 emails informing me that items are not in stock
The person I spoke to told me only 5 of the 22 items are in stock

Apparently, the stock levels on the website aren't in real time, so , what looked like a good sale was in fact not.

I placed a 2nd order yesterday containing 5 items. Only 2 of them are available.

If you want to have an idea of the level of stock for an item, add 20 to your basket, and see if it warns you that there are less than 20 available...

If yiou can get the basket to refresh showing 10 plus of an item, you will probably be lucky ....

That's how I do it if I'm unsure...

The system seems to hold over an entire order if one item is unavailable and automatically fulfulls other customers' orders behind yours in the queue - so even more items go out of stock!

The solution to this is to split your order into several different orders, then if one item is out of stock, it won't hold up an entire shipment...

So, in future, split your pourchases into several orders and you'll be luckier
