You can get Sonos, but that's hideously expensive.

My plan was to buy 3-5 AirPort Express units and wire up hidden speakers in the ceilings of the rooms I want the potential for music in. There's no reason why you couldn't do away with the hidden speakers and use traditional stereos instead, permitting you to play physical cd's and listen to the radio as well. The AirPort's will link up with your iTunes library on your PC and can be optionally controlled with your iPod touch if you own one. The same music all over the house, or different playlists in every room. Control the volume individually, turn off rooms on demand etc. etc. Also pretty cheap to do... you can pick up refurb APE's for around £50 each.

i dont own an ipod as all my music is stored on my mobile, so was hoping to err away from that option, unless of course it is significantly cheaper or the only way.

you basically want a hifi system which will let you choose your media throughout the house,

Unless you're an existing iTunes user and preferably with an iPod, don't go my route. It'll set you back more than your budget to do from scratch. Sonos is also going to be outside your price range for the number of rooms you want to do (I think the starting price is £2k!).

Bit stuck for further suggestions I'm afraid.

The Philips wireless music system appears to be within your budget.

lots of ways to do this. the most expensive way is to build a media server with enough outputs to supply an amp for each room and use a PDA to control whats played.

my solution is an Xbox (first gen) thats software moded (costs nothing to mod and about £20 for the xbox). with this you can stream media from a network drive (£80) and I controll theese with the dvd remote for the xbox.

OR you can spend lots of money on a device that does it for you which i belive to be around £150 per room.
