BT connection charge again!

When we moved in to our place we payed a BT connection charge of £125, no problem. We moved our Sky package across and Sky took over the line (did take approx 6 months for Sky to do this however). Now we are cancelling Sky and have now been told that we had to inform BT before the cancellation that we want to keep the line connected. The Sky person did not tell us this at the time and it is not stated in the T&C that it must be done prior to the cancellation order.
We are now facing another £125 conection charge from BT....
It has become very clear why these two companies are both ranked in the worst 3 for "Customer Service" in Britain.
As the Sky will not end for another 3 weeks surely there is enough time for this complete line disconnection to be prevented?

BT have a free connection offer on until the end of August anyway - so you can revert to BT without charge even if a completely new line is required.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Do you have to have the new phone line fitted by the end of September 2009 to get this free connection?
I am moving to a new house which will have no phone line connected but this wont be until the first week in October. With all the other charges with moving house we dont fancy paying £125 for BT!

    Hi, Thanks for the link.

I phoned BT yesterday to enquiry about a new phone line and the guy on the phone didnt mention there was an offer. He said there will be a £125 connection fee, I said hold on don't you have an offer at the moment thats free connection? He said 'yes we do'!
For this offer you have to make 4 chargeable calls a month - not including free phone numbers - so just call a friend or family member four times!
I asked about the expiry date of this offer and you dont have to have the line fitted by the end of September 2009 - you just have to book BT by end of Sept.

But just make sure when you call BT you mention the offer of free connection, BT didnt tell me - I had to tell them!

Wasn't it 10 calls a month, has it changed?

Hi, just to clarify on the free connection. There is an associated 18 month contract and you must make 10 calls per month. The calls can be to those numbers that are non chargeable within your calling plan, for example you can make local calls at the weekend which will not be chargeable as long as they last less than 60 minutes but they will go towards the 10 calls that you need to make each month.

    Many Thanks

Hi sorry to hijack this thread but question about BT line.......

about to move to rented and dont know if there is a phone line at the property, asked BT and they said they cant tell me what the charge will be until I have placed an order ...... after I place an order they will investigate the line (which I am pretty sure was BT before ...although not possible to ask owner as she died and new owner/Landlord doesnt know)

I cant imagine anywhere else that I would have to place an order BEFORE finding out if they can provide the service or if they will charge!

2nd question....... does anyone know ...if I move house after 6 months (this is expected to be a stop gap for me) what would be the charges involved, ie cancellation etc .

    many thanks

If you get BT at the new house there would not be a penalty for terminating your old contract early just the requirement for a new contract where you move to, you may still have to pay a connection fee where you move to though.

Hi there, if you can PM me with your new address details I can take a look on our system to see if there has been an active BT line at this premises before and if you would have to pay a connection charge..

In relation to your second question if you were to take service with BT there is a minimum 12 month contract and if you were to move house again in 6 months time and not take your BT service with you, you would be held to term for the reminder of your contract.. the cancellation charge would depend on what calling package you were to take out! You could be charged £7.50 or £8.00 a month for the reminder months of your contract (again depending on what package you would be on).
