I have checked out Pandora as suggested, it seemed to recover the photos but then I could not copy them anywhere. I took 200 photos at my best friends 50th party then deleted the lot. I wanted to make her an album as a present, can anyone suggest a free card recovery site. Would be so grateful for any help at all. Thanks.

Before you begin make SURE the card is WRITE PROTECTED. You don't want to damage it further than you already have. On the plus side, nothing has been deleted. All that happened was the camera/PC deleted the index saying where everything was, which is why the card appears to be empty.

Recuva is good, and there are tons of free software that does what you need. This is basic recovery 101, just search google for 'undelete'. :)

I couldn't get my 15 year old son off the computer to check my replies to this query. Getting more irritated by the minute with him for making me wait then found out he had worked his magic and retrieved all my photos!!! I continually nag him for spending hours fixated by the computer - guess I'll have to eat my words. Many thanks all the same.
