Roadside fruit and picking
What's everyone's opinions re picking fruit from the roadside? I know particulates from diesel fuel isn't good but would that just wash off or is the fruit basically polluted? There are three plum trees, with the small yellow fruits on them just begging to be harvested but not really sure if fruit from a tree on a moderately busy main road into town is the best place to get them from?
Seems such a shame for some of that fruit to get lost. I know the birds and insects will be very full though so it's not actually being wasted.

my daughter keeps telling me not to pick fruit from the road side, but near to her there are masses of elderberries, rose hips, blackberries and apples.
she says they absorb the fuel fumes etc and arent good for you!!!
however, i think i am going to take a chance and pick them. cant waste all that lot surely????

Please don`t pick anything around the road it`s not worthy in a long run. The fruit trees contain lead.
I was always told not to touch it and I know where there is loods of trees just left to it like that.
I don`t think it`s good for you , just buy it in a greegroceries they are cheper there than in supermarket.0 -
the uk food standard agency advise against picking on busy roads ,
Lead is no longer a problem as 99.999% percent of petrol engines use unleaded the others now use a lead free addititive, Diesel now has the sulpher removed at the refinery, I do pick roadside fruit but not from main roads, I would say that fruit from a tree would take a longer time to absorb pollution through it roots that let say brambles, its your choice at the end of the day if your willing to eat them fine but if ots a really busy road I would advise against it0 -
ive done it all my life and im still about to tell the tale!0

Eating the washed fruit must be healthier than living next to such roads. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

I started last year picking cherries from the side of the road. It is not hugely busy but always some traffic. Anyway we ate the jam all last year and are none the worse for it. I can't bear to leave all those cherries. (I left some for the birds)Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:
