My challenge to get married for £250

Options
Hello all

Right OH and I have finally decided to get married in October this year (2009) so that gives us about 12 weeks.

I am setting myself the challenge of getting married for £250.

We plan on inviting 12 guests plus ourselves and 2 boys - so there will be 14 adults and 2 young children.

We will get married at the local register office and I thought we could get guests / man in the street to take a couple of photos.

From the reg office we can go to a pub which is over the way from where we work.

I'm hoping they will have a two for one meal offer on but if not the food's pretty cheap anyway.

We can also ask work friends to join us for a drink if they wish.

Mid afternnon we will set off on holiday which we booked through the recent Daily Mail offer which I got codes for from MSE (thank you). We got four nights for £40 and that's for 2 adults and 2 kids.

We will wear clothes that we already have, you know the best ones which never usually see the light of day lol!

I'm not bothered about flowers or a cake - depends on what's left in the coffers really.

I'm going to buy either a second hand ring or a new gold plated ring off ebay. (When we've got rid of some debts this can be replaced some time in the future).

So does anyone have any ideas or comments?

    Good for you!!

I think it sounds like a great plan!! Have you booked the register office? as I'm guessing that will be your biggest expense.

I haven't heard about the dailymail offer - we're having a sin £9.50 hol for our honeymoon!!

No we haven't booked the register office yet. That should be about £107? We will be getting married on a Monday so I don't think they'll be overbooked :rotfl:

We've both been married before so the 'big day' sort of stuff isn't necessary to us.

The daily mail offer was on the holidays board at the same time as the Sun's.

Are you having a thrifty wedding too?

Good for you! I'm sure you can do it and I'll be following your thread with great interest!

We are getting married on a Tuesday and our total Regisrty Office fees are £180, I don't know if this differs from place to place?

I think it does nat from what I've seen on different council sites.

All the ones around here charge the bog standard unless you get married at an approved premises.

So if I say £107 for the register office, that's the £30 each, £40 on the day and £7 for two copies of the marriage certificate.

I did have a look at artificial flowers on ebay out of curiosity and they seem to be pretty cheap. I think I'll see if there's any flowers growing in the garden at the time. I know I've got ivy there.

Just realised nat Tuesday! Hope your day is perfect.

Let us know how it goes :T

Just been on Mr T's site and they do medium celebration cakes for £7.48, or £6.48 for a small one so this could be a possibility, maybe I could buy one with my clubdcard points.

Add a few flowers to decorate and one should look OK.

I was also looking at the possibility of flannel cakes to give to guests, not really sure if I want to give favours though tbh.

Not exactly thrifty but not on a massive budget either we have about £4k but I've never been married before.

Talking of flowers - I'm hoping to use the blue hydrangea growing in my sisters garden to use as my table centrepieces.
Having artificial for my bouquet though.

There are a few people here using the tesco celebration cakes, they are fab value and would look lovely with a few flowers place around!!

Roo if I were getting married for the first time again I would probably spend more money too.

Having said that we've been engaged for over 31/2 years and never seem to have any money so we've decided to say what the heck and have a wedding according to our budget.

Despite the fact we both work full time we're always skint lol.

We hope to be debt free in about 3 years time but I don't want to wait that long and the being married is more important to us than a big expensive wedding, not that I'm knocking anyone for big weddings it's simply just not us that's all .
