FE/College & distance learning

Can anyone give me any info please?
My 16 yr old son is due to start college in Southampton in September (we live in London).
I have applied for a bursary (for accommodation) & EMA, but was wondering if there is anywhere he can get help for traveling, as to come home at the weekend will cost £35approx (with student railcard). I know he won't want to come home every weekend but he will need to attend regularly for his Orthodontist appointments etc.
Appreciate any help, thanks

  • I'm afraid there'll be little if any help towards travel costs. The residential bursary used to include an element for travel, but this was removed for all but the 50 designated colleges.

The college will have a fund which will be able to help him with course related costs, but they too, will have been told specifically that it cannot be used for travel costs.

Will he be looking for a part-time job? Or would you be able to save a little from your child benefit/child tax credits? (from what you're not spending on feeding him)
