Hi,
GF could end up being pregnant this month ( touch wood ). currently she is working part time but its possible that she will be made redundant in the next couple of weeks, been there 9 years. So a few questions if I may, if anyone can shed some light please...
if she IS made redundant ( theres already been a few made ) then would she qualify for this maternity allowance thing? ( not the employer one but the government one )
how much will she get each week? ( I thinks its for 39 weeks )
when she gets her leaving date, can she apply for JSA straight after that? When can she apply for the maternity thing?
have googled this but a few conflicting bits of info so confused.
Thanks

She should be eligible for Maternity Allowance as long as she is pregnant at the point that her employment ceases. The rule is that she must have worked for 26 weeks out of the 66 weeks prior to the due date. Look on Direct.gov.uk for details.
She can apply once she is 26 weeks pregnant and it is £124 pw for 39 weeks, non-taxable. SMP on the other hand is taxable.
There should be no reason why she cannot apply for JSA as she will presumably looking for work in the meantime.
