I would agree with most of Greenbee's advice. I have a Victorinox Fibrox 19cm cooks knife and and a free 8cm paring knife from http://www.kitchenknivesdirect.co.uk, at £15.99 for the two. Anything over 20cm and 10cm for each type can be a bit unwieldy (and dangerous) in amateur hands.

As for chopping boards, I use plastic ones from IKEA - a big red one for raw meat (inc. fish) plus a big and little white one for everything else. The red one was £1.29 and the set of white ones was £1.39. Looks very professional, and DD is most impressed.

Saucepans. Two. 1 litre and 2 litres. Capacity is more important than diameter. For starters, get cheap aluminium ones. (You can trade up to stainless steel (the best VFM) when the risk of you destroying them has passed.)

Frying pan. 28cm diameter. Non-stick aluminium. With a lid.

500ml ovenproof glass measuring jug. 1 litre ovenproof glass mixing bowl. 1.25 litre ovenproof glass casserole dish with lid.

Wooden spoon (souvenir of coming last at a bowling match), plastic spatula, spoon and slotted spoon (75p in ASDA for all 3), set of measuring spoons (£1), s/s colander (£1).

My Salter electronic "add & weigh" scales are useful, but do seem to be eating batteries. I thought they would last a lot longer.

Braun hand blender. Very useful for soups. £29.39, but worth every penny.

And that is it. That is my kitchen inventory.

Personally, I wasn't impressed with Master Oliver's "Ministry of Food" book. The basic idea is excellent, but he still cannot resist the temptation to over-complicate his recipes. Everyone I looked at had two columns of ingredients.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

Hmm the only Marguritte Patten everyday cookery I can find on amazon was published in 1982, is this the right one?

Anyway great info so far, I have have my birthday coming up August, so at least I know what to ask for this year! :)

I had a look on Amazon and I think it is likely to be the 1968 0ne as it was about 1972 I got mine. It is somewhat tattered and food stained now. But I have made the christmas cake from it every year since and it is always brilliant.
