"12 months rule" re energy bills

Hi everyone

I have heard the term "12 month rule" bandied around a few times on the forums, usually in relation to large estimated bills that are being contested once the real reading has been given.. would anyone be kind enough to elaborate and let me know what services (eg both gas and electric? ) it may apply to ..any details however brief much appreciated !

Thanks in advance

You will find a copy of the code here: http://www.energy-retail.org.uk/documents/CodeofPracticeforAccurateBills.pdf The 12 month rule only applies were the supplier has failed to bill you. The rule does not provide a way out of large bills caused by previously estimated bills. The code even advises customers to check their meter reading if you receive an estimated bill.
