Debit Card Problem for Disabled User

You ignorant fool. His problems are two pronged, financial and retailers passing the buck. He needs to sort the first one out and the second problem will be solved with the options that I talked about when he needs to pay at filling stations. My cards are non-authorising/signature only cards. This was what I suggested when I said he does not need to use the pay at pump option.
You come across as arrogant and hypocritical when you call other people ignorant fools when your own plan is clearly flawed - he can ask for a signature only card, but it will still be an authorization style card - so not only will he not be able to use the "pay at the pump" facilities, he won't be able to use the "service call" facility if they have older portables which sync with the main terminal and don't have on-board printers for the signature slip (this being the reality for most chain stations etc.).
So your grand idea would likely force him to walk in to the building. Who's the fool now? :rolleyes:What would William Shatner do?0 -

That is what I meant. The OP states he cannot stand in a queue for very long so having a signature card thats what he would have to do. Stand in a queue after walking into the building.... thus causing the problem in the first place of him falling over...0 -

We looked at the pre-paid cards but as pointed out above they also need the authorisation, as do Chip/signature as Barclays Manager says above.
My main question though, to get this resolved, is it down to the merchants or the bank as both currently blame each other, so he is not getting any nearer a solution? The retailers say it is down to his bank to issue a card he can use, but the bank says the retailers should install equipment that would accept his card?
If we knew whom was responsible, we could perhaps progress things.
We did look at a credit card, but the only one he 'qualified' for was a Vanquish or something with an APR of over 100% and it seemed to have some sort of 'upfront' charges which totally confused us both (plus it looked very 'dodgy' iyswim).

The merchants cannot do anything at all. Any customer who has a full-authorisation debit card (such as your brother) can only use it at on-line terminals with real-time authorisation, so this excludes pay-at-pump etc.
If your brother is to be able to use these services, then he needs to find a bank that will give him a card that allows it - i.e. a normal Visa Debit card or similar. But no bank is under any obligation at all to do this. As with anything, it's totally up to them who they choose to give their cards to.0 -

There are a few banks who do credit cards aimed at people with a low credit rating - see below for more info. The higher APR is irrelevant provided he pays the off the balance in full every month. The easiest way to do is might be to transfer the money each time the card is used (as you would with a pre-pay card). As far as I know Vanquis is a reputable credit card, although I don't know anything about upfront fees. If he uses one of these CCs and keeps it clear, he will gradually re-build his credit rating.

I offered him a very useful advice that will prevent him doing any further injury to himself by needlessly walking into the petrol station shop using his crutches. He has to talk to his bank about the payment options that I suggested in my posts and the filling stations will assist him with his other needs when he gets there.Money is like a bird.....if mishandled, will simply fly away....0 -

I forgot to say, his 'helpful' branch of his bank, actually told him (whilst I was there) to give his card and Pin number to the petrol pump attendant as a solution to the problem. I couldn't believe they actually said that and I asked the lady to repeat it - she was rather quickly ushered away by one of her colleagues who also overheard it.
The bank does keep saying though it is down to the merchants to find a solution round the problem though. It is really frustrating for both him and me helping him.

Do you have a credit card? perhaps get him added onto that as an additional cardholder and then he can pay you at the end of every month?

Why do people get nasty with each other on these forums. Lately I have been told off twice and stopped posting for a while.
Firstly, Tally-ho, you sound like a good brother for him to have.
When someone is as disabled as your brother I think there must be an advice centre somewhere which can help him with all this even though he obviously brought this problem on himself. I'm sure he cannot be left to sort it out himself. He has enough to deal with. I'll have a look and see what I can find and post again if I come up with something. Meanwhile he can try some of the suggestions above.0
