London Weekend - what to do, any ideas?

Hi there,

I had booked a hotel (near the O2) for the weekend to see Michael Jackson on 1st August. As this will now no longer be happening :( I need to plan what to do (we can't cancel the hotel). There are 4 adults going and we will be there Friday - Sunday.

We all like the idea of the theatre but struggling to find cheap tickets, especialy for the Saturday night performances. Thinking of Dirty Dancing, Wicked, We will Rock you, Grease or similar. Not just looking at the theatre so any other ideas very welcome.

Want to make the weekend as cheap as possible, any ideas about where to go/what to do and ways of saving money would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Try Saturday afternoon performances - they are usually cheaper :D Also check out lastminute.com for £10 tickets - not the big stuff but some great alternative options, the national theatre also do £10 tickets :D

Remember you are out in Docklands so there's naff all going on out there at the weekend - you'll need to get the tube into town and back again (last tube about 1:30am) so clubbing is out tbh ;)

On Saturday check out borough market - lots of free food samples cheap drinks and fun and then you can walk down the river path to the Tate, national theatre and London eye!

You might also want to the Tower Bridge experience - its cheapish if I remember and pretty interesting a night. Also Hyde park is good (and free).

Visit London is another good website for things to do :D

if you put your dates into http://www.visitlondon.com/events/ it will give you details of events whilst you are there

also buy a oystercard as works out cheaper on the tube, can hand it back and get deposit back when you do anyway see http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/oysteronline/2732.aspx i have recently got one and wish i did it years ago, you can order online too

I'm only guessing you are two couples, then maybe the men could go to the Emirates Stadium to watch a pre season Tournament that includes Arsenal and Glasgow Rangers whilst the women go off Shopping in Oxford Street ( with the mens credit cards of course). Well the wife for it was a good idea.

    Also try www.discounttheatre.com
Register to get an extra 10% off tickets. Dirty Dancing looks to be a good price.

I'd recommend the Duck tour too. We loved it!

Get yourself a Taste London card to save on eating out. They still do a free trial (3 month?) if you google Taste London free trial.

    Have a great time!

Thanks to all managed to get tickets for We Will Rock You at a good price. Just wondering if anyone can help with travel advice. I will need travel between Friday and Sunday and expect to be needing to go in zones 1-4. What would be the cheapest thing to do, I have no idea?

cheapest would be the oyster card, as they are price capped at 50p less than that days travel card for zones you cover, and if you dont use up to that amount, then you get the lowe single prices. see www.tfl.gov.uk then click on the information about the oyster card

Tries the Oyster link but the below message comes up:
Important site maintenance means Oyster Online is temporarily unavailable.

Typical! Will try tomorrow. Can anyone explain briefly what the Oyster card is and how much it costs?

I believe you have to pay a £3 refundable deposit for each card, and you basically load it with credit, so you can travel on the tubes, buses & trams. As anna42hmr said, it caps 50p under the cost of a 1 day travelcard, so if you're travelling in zones 1-4, it won't cost more than £5.80 per day.
The Wikipedia page might explain it better... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oyster_card
