Car radio help please.

Options
Hi,
I bought a second hand Clarion radio/cd player to replace the radio/cassette in my wifes Peugeot 306.
Took out the old one and plugged in the new one......connectors could only be connected one way due to their shape and turned on.
Radio asked for the code, which I entered and everything was fine.
Pre-set all the radio stations I needed and tried a cd........perfect.
I then realised that when I turned the ignition off, the radio asked for the code again and lost all the pre-set stations and audio settings as if I had uncoupled the battery.
What did I do wrong ? .........Any help will be grately appreciated !
Thanks
bill :confused::confused:

Not all radios willfit 1 for 1 even though the connectors are similar,
You will need a permanent live on 1 of the wires to remember the presets and the code

I am sure the above link will help

There are two live connections to a car radio. One is a permanent live that does not go through the ignition switch and keeps the memory in the radio. The other is through the ignition to the on and off switch on the radio.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Yup, The thick red wire is usualy the permanent live. The yellow (sometimes have a in-line fuse) is the switching live.

You can connect these two up with an adaptor (may have one built-in) so that the car stereo can be used without the keys....(good for when kids sit in car outside house!)
  • Hi!
You can buy adaptors from Halfords which swap the two wires around and save having to butcher the wires in your car or on your radio cassette. The same adaptors are available much cheaper from ebay.

There is a picture here of the normal ISO connector, you sometimes need to swap or combine the +12v battery(Normally Yellow) and the +12v ignition(Normally red).
