Post Office Growth Bond - how to close on maturity?

My father took out a 12 month growth bond nearly a year ago and now wants to jump ship as he is uneasy about the Bank of Ireland connection.
Can he do this simply at any Post Office or does he have to write in to them, does anyone know?

If the bond has matured, it will have dropped into a maturity account. Just ring them on 0800 169 7500 and ask them to close it and send you the full amount by cheque or BACS.0

Does the Post Office (Bank of Ireland) normally write and say when the bond matures?
Is it when one deposits the original cheque at a Post Office - or up to (in our case) 4 months later when the bond is opened due to excessive demand?0 -

I thought they insisted on written authority to close accounts.0 -

You're right. My mum got a call back a few days later saying she'd have to write in.0
