So what happens when a husband is the registared owner and main named driver and the wife drives the car about during the day when he is at work.
Is this classed as fraud as well?

If there is little to distinguish between the risk, ie both husband and wife are of similar age then there shouldn't be a problem. If the husband is 80 and the wife is 18 then obviously there's a disparity in risk! :D

There are some people in this thread who must live with a clipboard in one hand making notes of any car with a tail light out.

Jeez! some people need to go get some oats.

How are you guys on this crusade EVER going to be able to prove anything?

I realise you DO actually mean it, but I simply cannot grasp a concept where the youngster is going to say,
"hang on, I can't drive the car today or it will mean I drove it more than Dad"

The car is insured. the Driver is insured. If the 5-0 stop the driver, he is not going to get charged with insurance fraud.
If the car crashes into yours, it is covered.

If he is pulled over everyday for a year, maybe someone will ask. Assuming he/she isn't stopped everyday...... Who on EARTH is going to know or care??? (apart from the clipboard carrying busybodies).

It's already been mentioned the Insurance companies aren't stupid, they know the risks of ALL the named drivers on the policy which is undoubtedly reflected in the renewal price.

OP, stop being a busybody interferring with other peoples lives.

Like you said Insurers are not stupid, if they have been miss led and there is an accident (Especially if its an expensive claim) they will often investigate it and its not uncommon for them to declare the policy null and void.

There are plenty of people who post on MSE who have fallen foul of this and as well as having the expense of paying the claim they find getting any type of insurance again very difficult / expensive.

I have known the police investigate these matters when they have simply pulled someone over, if they your face does not fit and they are suspicious they sometimes do contact the Insurers and take it from their.

I think in fact 'the friend' isn't the case here.

It's infact the OP that is committing insurance fraud

It is fraud. Shop them to the insurance company. I'm fed up of people like this making it more expensive for those of us who are honest.

I dont think the insurance company will care even if you report it to them, and heres why - they have got the premium for the years insurance, and quite simply if the car is involved in an accident, they will then drill into the detail around the policy and if they decide its fraud they wont pay out -
Who drive the car to work?
Whos name is the finance in?
Does the policy holder insure another vehicle?

So they get the insurance premium now AND wont pay out if it is fraud.

I suspect by the tone of the original post one of three things

    (a) the O/P offered advice to the friend when he/she was buying the car but the father 'knew better'

    (b) the friend - probably of similar age to the o/p - drives a better / higer insurance grouped car than the o/p.

    (c) both of the above.

Also, people who do what the friend is doing do know its wrong when they're doing it, so are unlikely to subsequently come on here and ask advice on if its wrong
  • Most large insurance companies systems are ready for this kind of usage on a car and the premium charge is rated due to the younger driver being on the policy.
The young driver should be named as the main driver if thats what they are.

so it may not be fraud, BUT this person must be named main driver if that is the case.
