Glass splashbacks - what colour to go for? Advice please

Hi all

I've decided that I'd like to have a glass splashback behind my hob in the new kitchen I am still planning. I had thought to have glass upstands for the rest of the worktops, including behind the sink, at one height of 10cm, as this is the distance behind the bottom of my window sill and bottom of worktop.I was pondering with having splashbacks (except for the one behind hob which will definately be glass) made out of same material and colour as the worktops.

The kitchen units will be maple, with a dark grey/ black worktop and same for the floor. The kitchen is quite small, 240cm wide and depth of about 246 cm.

I'm not sure what colour glass splashback to go for, and hoped you might be able to give some suggestions. I hope to move in the next couple of years, so need to try and keep it fairly neutral. With any colour I inject into the room, I think I need to keep it fairly subtle and safe. Black is the "safe" option, but I would like the room to feel light and airy and not too dark.
I want the option of being able to have a few colours paintwise which will match aswell. Part of the reason I'm having a new kitchen is the previous house owners didn't match the colours they used in the kitchen, so trying to find a colour to brighten the place up was a nightmare as no one colour really looked good.

I'm trying to keep costs down too!

I don't think that black is a particularly safe option, could you go for a light grey/silver option? Or how about just a frosted finish on plain glass? Or even turquoise, that's nice & zingy Or how about go a little crazy with aubergine, or red? You could pick it up on another wall. I know you want light, but if it's just one wall it would be ok.

It's just behind the cooker I think where I'd have a large splashback (width of cooker 60cm). The rest of walls where worktop is, the splashback would only be 10cm in height, and rest of wall would be painted.

My new kitchen is white gloss units with a black worktop and upstand matching the worktop. I have just taken delivery of the glass splash back for behind the hob which is black and white floral from B&Q. I did find a local supplier of glass splashbacks (who said they could do virtually any colour) but they couldn't do the floral. Cost £90 delivered during a 15% off w/end.

Ohh that sounds nice. What colour floor have you gone with, if you don't mind me asking. Does the upstand just go behind the hob? What have you done for the rest of the worktop, or have you just painted walls down to the top of the worktops.

At the moment the plan is to use some beige ceramic tiles I already have (a bargain I couldn't resist years ago and the guinea pigs cage sat on the boxes :o)
and the upstand goes right round to the height of the two windows in the room. The walls will be painted white. Oh and I have a black and white floral blind, a bargain from B&Q.

I'll try and take some pics to let you see.

That would be lovely. I find it difficult envisioning how to put stuff together colourwise when there are a number of factors to take into account - ie trying to match everything in the kitchen together without it looking bland.

Walls still need painting white but the splash back is in place and I'm delighted.

That's really very lovely Edinburghlass :) it works brilliantly as a focal point.

We're using a local glazing company to do ours. I've chosen 6mm green glass in a 3 metre run right across the worktops up to a height of 40cm. It's just a kind of glass green, soft but clean in colour. Haven't gone any higher as there is no need - hob is on the island. Units are cream and have just ordered grey granite this morning for the tops.

Ultimately I don't think it really matters what colour you choose - you might want to have other elements of the colour in the room to tie it in but this can be done with accessories too. Most kitchens are quite neutral colours that will go with anything anyway - wood, greys, black, white cream etc. so you can choose any colour for a splashback - that's where you add your personality!

H was wandering around showroom this morning asking if things went with stainless steel, black, cream - he doesn't grasp that anything will! Sadly he doesn't often apply that attention to detail when gettting dressed :rotfl:
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • can anyone recommend a supplier of glass splashbacks in Gloucestershire (Cotswolds) or N Wiltshire (eg Swindon)? Also, does anyone know likely costs per m (at say 0.2m and 0.4m height) and whether a kitchen fitter or specialist fitter is needed for long lengths (along two 3-4m long walls).

thanks in advance for any help
