Sixth form grants

Options
Hi, my grandson hopefully will be going to sixth form in September, his parents are divorced, his mother has remarried, but is not working, have tried to find the answer to this question but cannot see one, ie my son pays her maintenance only for our grandson, does the sixth form benefit be paid on her allowance , or is it on my son's salary, or her new husband's salary, any help would oblige, thank you, oap

  • Do you mean EMA? EMA is assessed on the household income for where the young person lives, which will be his mum and her partner. Any maintenance received will not be counted as income.

Don't know quite what you're after here OP. I'm at 6th form and I get EMA and a free train pass from my LEA. That's about all that's available I'm afraid. EMA is means tested and free transport varies depending on the policy of the LEA.
  • I think it is dependent on which area you live in. My son received a grant of £300 from the local lea. It is dependent on household income and you had to be in receipt of certain benefits to be eligible although I believe other people could apply if they had exceptional reasons why they needed it. It was available for one year only i.e not £300 per year of the course. It was to help pay with books, trips etc.

It would be worth looking on your local council website and seeing if there is any mention of something like this in the education section.

The EMA is something different and is worked out on the household income of where the child is living. The easiest thing to do if you receive tax credits is to send in the statement you receive from them that states your income. It will be the 2008 to 2009 one they want. I have just sent off my younger son's application.

Thank you so much for your replies, which are very helpful,,well her new husband has a very big salary, but we thought maybe as he is not the father, then he has no responsibility for our grandson as our son pays her maintenance for our grandson, so of course there will be no help if her new husband salary is taken into consideration. I could not find the answer anywhere.

Thanks again, problem solved, regards oap

I think you'll find that if her new partner lives in the same house as them, that his wages will count.
I have a daughter from a previous marraige, and live with ym partner.. and he earns just over the threshold, so she won't get ema :(
