Best Laptop ?

Not sure if this is right thread - and apologies if not - but I'm looking for a decent spec 17" laptop, with 4 gb memory if possible. I did want Dell but there are better offers around it seems. What can anyone recommend ? Is there a decent free site for trustworthy reviews ? I have done the free trial on which before so not sure if I can do it again ?

I imagine the best will cost about £2000. A budget would help along with what you propose to use it for.

Apologies - £600/£650 max - general surfing really, but my desktop is about to expire so want it good enough to be my main computer as it will be my only one. Want plenty of memory for facebook applications as they eat memory and current old XP only has 248 RAM !! Liked the fact I could customise Dell and have the Student Office/Word/Excel for £60 all installed for me but on the 17" that works out pretty pricey.

    Decent review sites:

I like the look of this Samsung. These Samsungs tend to get good reviews. It's Dual Core rather than Core 2 Duo but it is a fairly speedy processor.

Check out the voucher codes & offers at Dell.
I bought a laptop a while back and it was a toss-up between a Dell and a Mac. The Dell had one feature the Mac didn't (a very hi-res display) and after I applied three discount vouchers it came in at about half the price of the Mac.

Core 2 Duo is more recent and the range has better processors but when looking a specfic processor but there's no best. The T4300 is top of the range Dual Core and is similar or better than a number of Core 2 Duo Processors but there are Core 2 Duo processors which are better.

laptopsdirect.co.uk have a good selection and are reasonably priced. Use the 'advanced search' and it's almost like customising :-)

Nope, the best laptop would be the cheapest one that does the job so if it's stolen it's not a pain to replace £300 vs 2K. Hard drive size will not matter in a laptop as you shouldn't be saving ANY personal data on one.

Laptops are only ment for light use, I cannot recoment Dell, Acer HP or Compaq laptops as I've seen too many people with them having to wait months for their laptop to be fixed. Take it from me, they just don't last very long at all.

Look for something that's going to run cool and have a long battery life. Then look at processor/ram OS ect...

Build quality, especially hinges and keyboard are also important, I think. A laptop which creaks every time you open it and feels rickety will give unnecessary worry to its owner :)
