Severe discomfort does still apply.
The cooking test is whether or not you can cook a main meal from scratch.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
ahhhh thanks for that, and erm no i can't not without hearing me scream everytime i try to lift things or chop things..

Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -
To get DLA you only have to meet the criteria below, I got LRC on the basis that I need help cooking a meal & LRM on the basis that I need someone to accompany me when I go out.
If you thinK any of this applies to you id appeal straight away.
I was turned down initially, I asked for a reconsideration & appealed before winning a tribunal, it took 2 years but they did back date my money.
In order to obtain the lower rate (currently £17.75 per week) you need to show that your disability means that you need help during parts of the day or
that your disability means that you cannot cook a main meal for yourself even if you have all the ingredients.
-In order to qualify for the lower rate of the mobility component (currently £17.75 per week) you need to show that you require guidance from someone else when walking in places that are unfamiliar to you.

Veggyboy,
I too have unstable angina and cardiomyopathy. I was recently awarded HRM as it is dangerous to my health to walk any distance - ie angina, breathlessness, palpitations, tachycardia, fainting etc - I am very unpredictable, sometimes 10m sometimes 100m before chest pain and I tire very quickly. I also have trouble showering and washing/drying my hair. My symptoms last for several hours afterwards and it is bloomin' scary.
After having a peak at BCS's links to benefitsnow you would possibly qualify for HRM.
"The test here is whether the exertion required to walk would constitute a danger to your life or whether it would be likely to lead to a serious deterioration in your health.
-You need to show that you should not walk very far because of the danger to your health. -This criteria is intended for people with serious chest, lung or heart conditions.
-Some people with haemophilia may also qualify for the higher rate in this way.
-The serious deterioration does not need to be permanent but it should require medical intervention; for you to recover.
-You will need to show that any danger to your health is a direct result of the physical effort required to walk.
-People with epilepsy will need to show that any fits were brought about by the effort required to walk. "
Good luck,

Hi you can argue that you are in severe discomfort before, during and after the act of walking. Then the walking test wont apply. This is how we won my oh dla and he was awarded top rate mobility.0

Thanks lolababy & blackpaw & clarrisa. I am going to appeal, I had a TIA on Sunday so its not getting any better and am on the max drug I can take. Back to the hosp next week so am going to ask my consultant to write me a letter.I used to be me !! what happened0

Veggyboy,
Sorry to hear you're having a rough time. I asked my heart failure nurse for copies of my echo and Cardiac MRI scan reports and a couple of letters between my consultants and GP which showed how low my ejection fraction was and that I was unstable. She just printed them off the computer whilst I was there which would save you waiting for the doctor to reply, then I scanned them into the computer to save them for future reference. I also wrote a brief summary about my type of cardiomyopathy (left ventricular non-compacted, which is very rare and they would struggle to find any info on it).
Good luck with your appeal,

To get anything higher than lower rate care you need at least one hours of care on top of the cannot cook a main meal for yourself.
My husband needs supervising in the shower and help with drying and washing as he has non functoning hand. And only gets lower care because of making the meal thing.
