Sneaky AA

Recently renewed my AA membership and paid by credit card over the phone. Got a letter this morning thanking me for "confirming your continuous credit card authority" and telling me they'll renew my membership automatically from now on.

No way did they ask me if I wanted to do this while I was on the phone. I've now called and cancelled it but it seems like sharp practice to me, just relying on people's inertia.

Increasingly I find myself having to 'opt out' of stuff I don't want and haven't asked for, there should be a regulation that consumers cannot be 'opted in' without explicit permission or instruction

Presumably you did 'opt-in' when you renewed. And IIRC AA does give you a month's warning that they are going to renew so there is time to cancel.

Nevertheless I agree with you. One has to watch these things like a hawk these days.

As I stated in my post, I was not asked if I wanted to opt in to CCCA, nor did I request it. Yes of course they give 7 days notice of debiting the card but it's just the blo*dy principle of the thing.

i took out RAC cover in December and i wastn asked on the phone, but it is in the paperwork when its posted out to you. You then have the option to cancel it.
I wouldnt really expect the AA to relay all the T & Cs over the phone, you would be on for hours.
They are probably all the same anyway.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

It will be buried in the T&Cs somewhere.

One of my New Year Resolutions this year was to read from tip to toe every T&C I either agree to from now on, or where possible, old ones already agreed to. You'd be surprised what turns up... read the bloody things! It's a pain, it gives you a headache, but it might just save your bacon. You're lucky the AA was up-front (ish) with this and put it in semi-bold print.

A lot of car insurers do this now as well, and you cannot opt out of it. But I have found that even when they have automatically renewed it they will cancel it when you phone.

Very irritating though as I'm a rate tart and change insurers, etc., every year so I don;t want automatic renewal.
