Clamped on private land

Hi all, just like to say great site which i will be using regularly from now on, anyway to my issue

I arrived in leeds to suprise a family member, on arrival i could not park on the road outside the house due to the police placing 'No Parking' cones on the road her house was on and all local roads, due to a match in the area.

Therefore i had no alternative but to park on the land around the back of the house. We could not ring the tennants company and obtain a temporary pass as it was 7PM and they were not open, however i could not move my car elsewhere due to not knowing the local area and as im sure any person in an unfamiliar area would agree; unwilling to leave my car out of view on a road far from the house.

On getting up in the morning, i noticed i had recieved the clamp. This had gave me no chance to ring the tennants anyway and apply for a pass as the clamp must have been put on very early and I was due to leave to travel home then anyway.

It was going to cost me £100 pounds to relase, and an extra £100 every day later, when i rang the number the person said i had been clamped on the 27th, which i said was not true as the ticket said i had been clamped on the 28th (obviously trying to get an extra £100 out of me). I explained the sitation of not being able to park elsewhere but as you all know this fell on deaf ears. I then had to wait 3 hours for the people to arrive and had to pay as needed to get home. The reference number on the ticket for this is very hard to read and so when i appealed im not sure i even sent the correct reference number. As i now know from this site and as you will all expect they have not bothered to get back to me with any response now they have my money.

I know i did park on private property however it was late at night when i arrived and i was leaving in the morning, there were plenty of parking spaces so i was not obstructing anyone with a permit. I have been told i am one of the first people that they have seen clamped there, many people have parked there before and nothing has happend so they are not very relieable with there patrolling obviously.

I was wondering do you think i should contact the tennants instead in hope they might actually respond or just give up and take this as a lesson?

(Sorry for such a lot of reading!)

You would have been better off cutting it off and just leaving it there. Or paying someone else to do it for you.

Was it a company which clamped you or was it a group of tenants? Was there a SIA number on the paper you were given and was the person wearing a badge with this number on? What signage was there, if any? All this information will be needed if you want to pursue this through small claims court to get your money back.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

It was a clamping company that did it, he was not wearing any id so no visible SIA number, but the reciept did have a SIA number on. There was a sign on the wall but further down from where i parked and as it was dark so i just didnt notice it

Hopefully more knowledgeble than I will be able to assist if you decide to sue the clampers assuming the C/C will not help.
