WiFi channel

Options
Sometimes my second computer becomes very slow on the internet and it is connected wirelessly to my Netgear router by a USB network adapter.

Someone suggested interference from another network and suggested I download a program called net stumbler.

I did and discovered that there are 6 wireless networks around me, all using channels 1, 6 and 11.

I use channel 11 and one of the strongest networks is on channel 11 and also it is unsecured.

I can access the internet using it if my wireless router is switched off. I discovered this because the wireless router is in the room my grandson sleeps in when he stays over and he switched it off because the flashing lights were stopping him sleeping.

I wondered why my connection dropped and mucked about with my settings and got back on the internet not realising it was not longer through my internet connection.

How can I find the location of this unsecured connection so I can inform them?

Also what would be the best channel for me to use to stop the interference, or should I just try trial and error?

Jenny

    Let sleeping dogs lie, IMHO.

If 1,6 and 11 are all in use, then that's a challenge as these are the "non-overlapping"channels. Some routers will decide for themselves the best channel, that worked for me (D-Link DIR-655). Otherwise maybe go for 3?

I usually find 13 is a good channel - hardly anyone uses it for some reason.

Probably because there is some overlap with channel 11?
Or because channels 12 and 13 are not allowed in the US, and some routers fail to use them.
