This disc cannot be played

My parents have combined video recorder/video player/dvd player (Samsung SVDVD545) which is about 5 years old.

The video part is working fine but the DVD side won't play. I have tried lots of different discs, including ones which have worked previously, but after saying loading it comes up with the message "This disc cannot be played. Please check the disc" I thought that a disc cleaner might do the trick but that came up with the same message too.

I have done a search on the internet and it seems that other people have had this problem with Samsung DVD's too but no one seems to have a solution.

Any suggestions as to what we can try will be gratefully received

In my opinion probably not much you could do without wasting time/energy/money on trying to repair it. Especially when you can get a new DVD player for under £20.

They still have a lot of videos which they like to watch so they would need both DVD and video and also something which records, if you can find one that does all 3 for £20 please let me know :D

Well if the VHS part of it works why get rid of the whole thing, just have an additional DVD player.

Most likely problem is with the lens or laser. Which although cheap in terms of parts is really not worth it in terms of labour and repair.

I've seen vhs/dvd combis for less than £40 which is not bad for supporting an outdated format.

As they also have a virgin cable tv box I doubt they would have the room or enough scart sockets. They also need the setup to be as simple as possible as they are in their 70's. I appreciate your advice though and will look at what combis are out there and then we can weigh up the pros and cons.

I have also emailed Samsung to see if they can offer advice.

I appreciate that. Strangely enough we just connected up an old DVD player for my nan a couple of days ago. And I certainly understand the need for simplification. I don't think there's much you can do without 1. opening it up yourself (and risk damaging the working vhs anyway), 2. professional repair (which would cost more than a replacement). You shouldn't touch the lens but what may be worth a go is a compressed "air" can to give all the dust a good blow out. I sometimes do that with my old dvd player when it's misbehaving.
