Council Tax Final Notice

Obviously I don't know anything about your financial situation, Muckyfingers, but I have on-line access to my current account and credit cards and it doesn't take more than a couple of minutes to check that all is as it should be. You could do that every few days.
I would have noticed immediately that my council tax hadn't been taken, especially as it's not a small amount.0 -
Many thanks for your advice. I'm sure this has educated me for further similar situations and my knuckles are well and truly rapped on not keeping a closer eye on my account. Unfortuantely that will not help me retrospectively so I shall use my good charms to try and remedy the situation on Monday morning.
Thanks again0 -
I ran up a backlog of £500 or so in council tax and lost the right to pay monthly. Ended up being threatened with baillifs and the like, and Im currently paying back £60 a month (have to pay manually each month, they wont do DD)
So Im pretty sure that if someone like me can do that after so much hassle, then someone like you trying to sort it snesibly should be ok.0 -
I wouldnt worry too much, I got into a similar situation (my flatmate assured me she had paid it, but hadnt!!!) if you ring them and explain the situation they should help. The letter we had gave us a court summons date and told us we could no longer pay by installments, but actually when we rang them they asked us to pay one amount (equal to the amount we owed so far) then they set up a direct debit for the rest.
Once I had calmed down and stopped wanting to throttle my flatmate I was quite grateful to the council!!0 -
Check with your bank that the DD is being drawn from, they should be able to tell you if the other party is actually attempting to take the money. This assumes of course that there is sufficient IN the account to pay out? If there is, then maybe the Council aren't actually drawing the money out? That's happened to me, they had the right, they had the notification but yet demand full payment just because they couldn't figure out how to TAKE the money! That said, they figured it after I told them, then took the lot.
It might be the same for yourself? It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
If two payments have been done manually it's only the July payment that is missing. How come there's a final notice 2 weeks into the month and what happened to the the first and second notice?0

If the demand was issued before 01 April 09 for this years council tax then there would have been 4 payments due by now (April, May, June and July).
The basic premise of issuing the reminder, 2nd reminder and final notice is the same - the payment has not been paid within 7 days of the due date - If it was due on 1st of July then it could be issued after the 8th of July.
The final notice could only be issued if both a reminder and 2nd reminder have previously been issued and settled with 7 days of issue.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
I ended up with a "You have lost the right to pay by installments" letter years and years ago after I had been into the offices and spoken to a lady about a situation.
A short while later I have a final notice and the smug cow denied all knowledge of the conversation we had. I was around the age of 18 and had left home for the first time. I was terrified at the prospect of the eventual court summons etc.
I learnt from that whole experience that the council are a law unto themselves. Even if you are suffering hardship they will still send it to court and then collecting agencies therefore bumping the debt higher and higher.
You cannot possibly come out of it on top and the only option without ending up owing more is, to just pay it, even if you have to borrow the money. There is no leeway whatsoever.
Hate the council tax dept!0 -

Absolutely agree. I have given up with my local council trying to prove my son is a student and is not liable for council tax. They now take it fortnightly from my benefit, plus £400 that I had to pay to stop the bailiffs.Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

I live in my head - I find it's safer there:p
