I have finally taken the plunge and have just bought a macbook. I have always used windows before and have never really used a mac apart from going on the web. Does anybody have any virus protection and software to recommend?

Been discussed many times before do a search on the forum to save us all typing the info again!

Unless you visit very suspect websites, install pirated software the risk is virtually zero of viruses.

However ClamXav is the popular free anti-virus.

I've typed out a big list a few times; I'm sure if you search you'll be able to find it.

The main ones I always install are Adium for instant messaging, Perian for adding codecs to QuickTime, Flip4Mac for playing Windows Media files in QuickTime, VLC for region-free DVD watching and the odd file that QuickTime can't play, MacTheRipper for copying DVDs, HandBrake for converting video files for iTunes/iPod/PSP etc, the Unarchiver for adding more support for compressed files, SuperCal for calibrating your display, and Transmission for bittorrents.

I use Safari for web-browsing (with a backup copy of Firefox just in case), Apple Mail for my email, and all the iLife apps.

    Good place to start is:

but let us know if there's anything specific you can't find.
Any viruses (virii?!) (or trojans, etc) for can only be activiated by a user downloading & opening a file, or entering passwords, so the best one is your brain, for now!
