I have finally taken the plunge and have just bought a macbook. I have always used windows before and have never really used a mac apart from going on the web. Does anybody have any virus protection and software to recommend?

I've typed out a big list a few times; I'm sure if you search you'll be able to find it.
The main ones I always install are Adium for instant messaging, Perian for adding codecs to QuickTime, Flip4Mac for playing Windows Media files in QuickTime, VLC for region-free DVD watching and the odd file that QuickTime can't play, MacTheRipper for copying DVDs, HandBrake for converting video files for iTunes/iPod/PSP etc, the Unarchiver for adding more support for compressed files, SuperCal for calibrating your display, and Transmission for bittorrents.
I use Safari for web-browsing (with a backup copy of Firefox just in case), Apple Mail for my email, and all the iLife apps.0 -

Good place to start is:

but let us know if there's anything specific you can't find.
Any viruses (virii?!) (or trojans, etc) for can only be activiated by a user downloading & opening a file, or entering passwords, so the best one is your brain, for now!0
