I thought it was madness anyway. I was in favour of road upgrades. There are sections which could be widened with a passing lane introduced, and other areas where a right turn lane would help the flow of traffic. The bits at Omagh, Newtonstewart and Strabane are pretty good (and incidentally built on the line of the old train track so it's a no go to re-use that!) so if they could just sort out the bits north of Strabane, and most importantly how it feeds into the city. The bit between Omagh and Newtonstewart is a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so I know development is more sensitive, but I still think there's room for road widening there with a climbing lane in some places.

As ever, they didn't need to spend money on consultation, they should have just asked me!!!! lol.

That makes a lot of sense.

I don't suppose they would consider using some of the money they had set aside for this project to reopen the A&E in the City Hospital

  • They can't spend Capital funding on that - it would require Revenue funding.

The A5 project is being revived with details coming out at the North South committee meeting this week in Armagh. Instead of £400m the Republic are only going to provide £42m!
It will be interesting to hear where the rest of the money is coming from.

And that is only part of the madness. Trying to spend money in a financial year for fear of losing it, or it being taken as a sign that you do not need it, is one I could never rationalise. Hardly an incentive for running a Department efficiently and sensible forward planning.

I am convinced that some twisted individual is sitting in Whitehall wetting him or herself laughing at the hoops civil servants have to jump through because of their illogical and mad rules. If it isn't complicated then they'll invent a new rule to make it so.

Well, maybe now they should look at the real alternatives, i.e upgrade the road that's there !!

So the whinging farmers got their way on 'environmental' grounds. Never heard them worry too much about the environment when they were looking to gas or shoot badgers suspected of spreading TB.

Meanwhile those of us near Omagh with no A&E will have to battle their way through lorries, buses and damned tractors as we try to get to the Royal to have perhaps life-saving treatment. Some day as they lie in the back of the ambulance going along the A5 I hope this thought enters their heads. Hey ho, the realities of living west of the Bann I suppose.
    And the winners are NIMBYs
