Hi,
I have been trying to reset my system (laptop HP DV7 CT1000) to factory settings using the inbuilt and CD recovery programs. This works fine, however, when the system tries to install vista at the initial automated setup i get the following error:
Windows is now setting up the following items: Pre install Software Installer 2nd
Chkerrbb.cmd: detect some error during PININST_BBV
Chkerrbb.cmd: check c:\systemsavlogs\burnbootwarn.log
I now can not use the laptop as windows fails to setup or load. How can i resolve this?
Many thanks for any assistance.

Get Dos 6.2 from M$.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=96cc3197-b7e5-4b31-badb-ddaac771295f
Follow the instructions to burn to floppy, (or flash if you dont have a floppy drive,) then run chkdsk /r.To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -
Will give it a go thanks.0

Dos 6.22 isn't much use for ntfs.
Have you tried the process more than once?0 -

Here we go....
Vista repair console........
Same again as before, burn to disk or flash then run chkdsk /r....

Many thanks for the link. That looks like a good site - as HP dont give any vista disks.
I have tried the reinstall process/recover process about 5 times - same problem - it wont go away or let me use the machine.
will this vista file affect the hp software or will it just install vista and not affect the laptop?
Thanks guys0 -

Tried all the repair tools but no joy. Can not solve the problem and get windows vista to load. Vista is installed as i can see it on the partition under the repair options. looks like i will need to buy a new vista CD and do a clean install?? If i buy a new Vista, will i need an upgrade version or a retail version (so many different types it is very confusing).
I just need a way to get the old vista files off the laptop and new files on it. ny help appreciated. Thanks.0 -
Have you asked HP for the disks, or solution?0
-
IF HP are anything like Acer they will want around £50 for a solution.
Better off buying a retail copy of Vista home basic £40-£65 ish on Ebay.
Or just install Linux. If the problem was caused by HDD failure you havent lost anything then....To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -

Just close that window without using either button " <retry> or <Details>"
The restore will continue and you can manually install the failed driver after the system is bootable.
What has happened is that some past driver install put new firmware on one of the onboard chips so the original driver will no longer recognize the hardware or install.
I have used this method many times and have even verified that the restore partition from on OE hd can be imaged to a newer larger hd and this will still work.
Hope this info helps.0
