Ice cream van sounds... son and his friends ask for an ice cream.. give them a fiver and am handed 20p change... Despite the fact I have ice cream, cones and chocolate sauce in the house. Have you ever forgotten to "money save"?

    I did today actually!

Went to the local shop (bad move already!) to buy some reduced items and ended up buying a milkshake despite having milk and powder at home...

Reminds me of the story that some money-saving parents teach their children that the music means that they are out of ice-cream!:D

I started off telling my son that but couldn't say it with a straight face and he soon realised I was joking...
  • When my son was a toddler he called it the `music van` and would dance when he heard it.....I didn`t rush to enlighten him!

It can't ALWAYS be money saving. You teach your kids more by letting them make choices IMHO (especially littlies) eg you can have A OR you can have B. But you can't have both. There isn't enough money for both. That, IMHO, is a real moneysaving lesson. Because it teaches them about choices and prioritising.

The ice cream van came down our road and while mum was not around, my little sister and I ( probably my idea....it usually was!) helped ourselves to pennies out of mum's purse. (Not a lot of cash to go round then, although we did have the occasional ice-cream from the van on a Sunday as a treat.)

She came downstairs to find sis and I licking our ice creams with triumphant expressions. In one swift movement, she swiped the cones from our hands and they were launched onto the back of the coal fire. I will never forget to this day, the sight of the ice cream trickling and bubbling in the flames and I danced a dance of disbelief and utter frustration before the fireside, as the stolen fruits disappeared before our eyes.

    Money wasted, but lesson well-learned!!

I remember being fairly broke when my children were small and telling them that sliced tinned peaches were chopped up goldfish .Neither of them even though they are both grown up will eat tinned peaches at all I think I must have scarred them for life:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
  • yes my dd had been ill and I needed a thermometer to take her temp. Just went down to Lloyds chemist and bought one. I didn't even ask how much it was. But that and some paracetomol came to £7. Should have gone to Boots and used my points.

Not sure about the thermometer but if you register with Boots "minor ailments" they will give you paracetamol free of charge. The idea of this is you tell the pharmacist what the problem is and they will give you the medicine - it's to save the NHS money as it stops you from visiting your doctor and having to get a prescription! I have had several things free from Boots because of this - including head lice treatment for my children - which would have cost £12.00! Sometimes if I run a bit low on things like children's ibuprofen or liquid paracetamol I go in and say one of them has a cold/temperature and they give me another bottle...

I heard of someone telling their kids that the ice cream van was selling carrots and parsnips, neither of which they liked!:)
