I used to work for Midland Bank (now HSBC) and we used the 'PER POST' description when we received a manual payment through the mail for crediting to someone's account. If the payment had been sent by a third party, we sent a payment advice out to the customer so they knew from where the money had come.

Why not contact HSBC and ask them - it may be that it was intended for someone else's account and has gone to yours by mistake.
