OS to external hard drive, copy?

Options
I have tried making a back up of my whole OS using Norton Ghost (clone) but get the following message;

Message: Can't find drive with specified disk identification. You may need to load additional drivers to access this drive.

So then backed everything up using 'Windows back up system' but that requires using a floppy disk at the end, for some reason. Is there any other way to back everything on my laptop onto an external hard drive?

Thanks

    I also tried Ghost 10, being Norton's ghastly software it failed with a cryptic error message.

    I'm now very happy using Acronis 9. I attach an external USB hard disk to my laptop, then put the Acronis boot CD into the laptop CD-drive. Boot the laptop and use the Acronis system to make a backup of the harddisk. Acronis will do full backups, incremental and differential backups of the disk, without having any problems with Windows also trying to use the disk while the backup software is running.
  • Hi
    Nero BackItUp will do it, if you have Nero. I also use Acronis True Image.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks all - did find a programme called DriveImage XML which seems to have done the job. Still don't know why Ghost did'nt work but as long as everything is backed up, that's okay with me.
