Applying for a credit card-help please

Hi

looking to apply for a credit card
Anyone help?

credit history

Bank with Abbey national
just got a £3,000 personal loan with them March 2006 to rennovate house
experian credit check says my credit score is 650 which is poor
no ccj`s or late payments
status says all payments /direct debits up to date

I applied for a capital card in Jan 2006, got turned down
however checkmyfile is showing I could apply to virgin for a card
I do not possess any credit cards, just a current account with a visa debit card

will virgin turn me down?

I don't know wether virign will turn you down or not. But I do know that it dosn't help with getting a credit card if you havn't already got one, (yes I know, so how do you get one in the first place), no credit history you see for the lender to go on.

The best place to go is usually you bank, who do know you and your track record.

This is probably not the best advice you'll get, but it worked for me, I am discharged from bankruptcy last Oct (I think it was), and I applied for a Capital One CC for a laugh, and they only went a blumming gave me one!!! With a £1000 limit too...

Wont work in this instance, as she banks with Abbey, and their credit card is run by MBNA.

  • Actually, the reason is to buy new furniture, would it be worth going to argos, etc, just get a storecard?

could get by without the credit card

I would go with Barclaycard. The reason I say so is that Experian's credit score pack grossly over-rates previous searches and can drag your score down a great deal. Thats no problem with some lenders, as they will calculate their own score, but according to this site some lenders do use the pre-prepared Experian score.

My advice would be to try Barclaycard as they will credit check using Equifax, and chances are there may not be those recent searches on there.

    Called barclaycard, they have declined,
will leave for a while, as I feel too many apps will drop my rate further

yes but the argos card is like 29.9% apr (is it worth it) if you are going to leave an outstanding balance on the card?
  • As a 'card tart' and wishing to transfer a balance from 0% to another 0% I applied for a HSBA card as reccomended in previous threads. They (HSBC) wrote back and asked for my bank statements. Something that has never happened to me in 30 years, and I was certainly not going to send mu bank statements to someone who offered me a facilty for a card.
Then applied to Lloyds TSB, no request for bank statements and had a card through in 14 days.
