I thought best offers were anonymous, how did the seller get your user ID?

But how do you do that please?

Are you provided a link specifically to do so? (I don't ever remember seeing one when I've made a best offer), or do you use the bid retraction form (linked to here http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/buy/questions/retract-bid.html ) as you would with any bid on an auction?

On auctions, there are only specific reasons that a bid can be retracted and changing your mind isn't one of them. The seller can object to a bid retraction if it doesn't follow the rules. Whilst no one can be forced to purchase, ebay may take sanctions against those who abuse the bid retraction policy.

Or is there another way to retract best offers?

I can't find a link as ebay help is being its usual helpful self. However, here:

    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/buy/best-offer.html
    it says:

Note: Expired offers, declined offers, and retracted offers all count against the "offer limit per item".

Whenever I have made an offer I have the option available to retract it, that only vanishes once the seller accepts or declines my offer or it times out. Likewise I have held an offer hoping to get a better one only to have the offer withdrawn on me (sci fi is the main area where that happens ot me, I think buyers remourse kicks in when buyers sober up!).

    I've found the link! :j

I can't link to it, but it's at the bottom of the purchasers screen , the equivilent of the bidders screen, when you've made a best offer.
    [Edit: Yes I can
    http://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?RetractBestOfferShow&frmPage=992 ]

    The page says:

Before sending a Best Offer or a counter offer, be sure to read the item description, your trading partner's feedback and any additional terms that have been listed. If you have any questions about the item or the negotiation, email your trading partner before submitting a Best Offer.
Please remember that every Best Offer is binding. Cancelled Best Offers are counted toward your maximum available offers. In some categories, you may not be able to make another Best Offer.

You may retract a Best Offer if:
    • You accidentally enter a wrong offer amount (for example, you submitted an offer for £9.50 instead of £99.95).
    • The description of an item you have placed an offer on has changed significantly.
    • You cannot get in touch with your trading partner by email or telephone.
It then has a box to enter the item number in.

Goodness, that's a first, someone actually found something useful in the ebay help pages.

Out of interest what did you search for as I got nothing at all sensible when i tried?

I didn't actually find it this on the help pages, I happened to make a Best Offer and happened to notice it purchases link of the item. :)

Oh well, and there was me thinking that ebay had actually managed to have employed someone to check just how useful their help pages actually were!

    At least you found it.

A little bit of detective work on Google used to be required to track down users if there was any negotiation required, which is why ID's were hidden. Now ebay has the counter-offer facility, so deals no longer need to be completed outside of the listing.

It is also useful to see who has made pitiful offers and consider adding them to the BBL. Somebody who offers £2, £3 then £4 on a £25 item including postage is not somebody I'd choose to deal with.

Recieved another email this morning from the seller, and I quote...

    "Please purchase my *******".

    Desperation springs to mind.
