Private van insurance - where to find the the cheapest?

A friend of mine is buying a used van - for private use instead of using her car and has asked me to help look for reasonably priced insurance. She asked her current car insurer but the quote she got was almost four times more than the car!

Can anyone recommend a couple of car insurance companies please for a Transit sized diesel van (plain... no lettering as it's for private use only). I saw this page but it's such a lot to read through so a short-cut would help please!

Thanks

    Hmmmm

You don't want to read through an advice thread! You just expect someone else to do the leg work?

No wonder you and your friend can't get a decent quote.

Part of the reason why van insurance is so expensive is that so many people claim it's for "personal/private use" and the next thing you know they're using it for work or a new job and haven't informed the insurers.

That's not very nice! I am one who spends hours helping others in one way or another and the minute I ask someone for advice, you jump on me!!! I just thought someone may have a quick link and nothing more and certainly do not expect anyone to read through anything for me, just asked a quick question that's all!!!

Won't be used in work business at all because she has use of company car!

You friend may indeed only use it for personal use, but the market for van insurers is limited. Whereas there are many thousands of insurers, brokers and schemes for car policies there are far fewer for vans. A lot of general motor insurers simply don't want the risk of van policies.

I use Yes Van Insurance for my van personal use.

I got it through one of the insuresupermarket style comparisons then went direct, well via Quidco for the deal.

The main pitfall about van insurance from what I read is that if you move car NCD across to a van, even if its personal use you cannot then move it back to a car in the future.

I have just rung Direct Line to ask and the woman said this isn't true and if my friend changes back to a car afterwards, the NCD can be transferred across like it can from the car to the van!
